XML is stricter than HTML, and that is the whole problem
A browser will forgive almost anything in HTML. XML forgives nothing, which is why a file that looks fine fails to parse:

- The root element, which is the fastest way to tell what a mystery file is.
- What the format actually is, read from the namespace. A sitemap, an RSS or Atom feed, an SVG and an Excel sheet all announce themselves that way, so the viewer names them rather than making you guess.
- Elements, attributes and depth. Depth is usually the answer to why a script cannot find the node it wants.
- Namespaces and CDATA blocks, counted. A file with three namespaces is a file where a plain tag name lookup will fail.
Elements collapse, so a 1,200 URL sitemap stops being a wall of text.
What this will not do
It will not validate against a schema. Well formed and valid are different things: this checks the first, and a DTD or XSD check is the second. A file can be perfectly well formed and still wrong for its purpose.
It will not pretty print or reformat the source, and it will not edit anything.
It will not apply an XSLT stylesheet, so a file that is designed to be transformed before being read will show as its raw structure.
